Do you attend writing panels? Do you participate in them?

Sisters in Crime Logo

Being a mystery writer, I belong to Sisters in Crime.  Our New England branch has a speakers bureau, and you must be a published author to belong to the bureau.  We give panels, mostly at libraries all over New England.  This is a nice way for midlist authors to meet readers, sell books and hone their speaking skills.

We have a set a "canned" topics such as Mystery Making, We're Not Making This Up, The Modern Heroine, Pathways to Publication, Stealing From the Dead---Ideas and Where We Get Them, and Using What You Know to Write a Mystery.  We also do The Modern Historical and Death in Shorts (all about short stories).

Do you give talks about writing and your books?  Our audiences always find the writing process itself interesting and are interested in finding out about Pantser and Plotters.  I'm a bit of both.

Do you attend panels at libraries or at conferences?  Attend author talks?  It's a good way to get a sense of what writers actually do.

Plant butt in chair for starters.  That is rule #1 for all writers.  We  are a convivial bunch when not writing.  At writers' conferences, the bars are always full of talk as well as drink.

Hope to see you at a New England library talk soon.

I've never been on a writing panel, but I have been in critique groups. I can see that panels would be fun and productive though.
