In this day and age of razing landmarks to make way for High Rise Apartments or concrete parking ramps there is little left of the old world. When it comes to entertainment, the environment changes even faster. The Ghost Music of Vaudeville is about a troupe of actors, actresses and musicians who were part of the vaudeville stage at one time. The theatre sits in disrepair, and a greedy land developer is out for revenge. Part of that revenge is to demolish every Keith Theatre in the United States.

Charlie Wolfe, reporter for the Ironwood Daily Globe, Tommy Forester, teenager and champion for the down trodden, and Piano Man, (aka Rudy Poncigrau) who used to play for the vaudeville acts, the black and white movies, and more all have other ideas.

Will one last performance bring out enough support to stop the bulldozers before Damien Callistrari and his henchmen extract the revenge he seeks? Roberto Callistrari is going against his father’s wishes when he begins to fall for Charlie Wolfe –with his ties to Hollywood and Broadway he entices Bette Midler to bring her creativity and personality to help bring the Keith Theatre back from the edge. Together will they be enough to save this Keith Theatre and those lives so intrinsically entwined with the Ghost Music of Vaudeville that still haunts the walls and stage of this Keith Theatre in Ironwood, Michigan.

When do you Introduce your Protagonist?

When do you introduce your protagonist? Think about it. Your reader will want to know who and why, at the very least, when they begin to invest themselves in your book. People care about people not back story, not a favorite tea pot. Unless of course, it’s the protagonist's favorite thing left to her by her grandmother or a favored aunt.

But see, there we have it—that tea pot is connected to a person. Who is that person —why does or should the reader care?

If this town or the place is a character, we need to know why this town should be different then any other. We need to know how and why. We need to have some reason to visit this particular town at this particular time in your story-worth-telling. Or why are we here – we didn’t stop by for a scenic tour on our way to find a good compelling book to read.

You must make it matter be that character person, character town, or character monster. Why do you shed a tear when the big foot is released at the end of The National Lampoon Christmas Vacation? It’s a furry monster. Why do you care about the calf Billy Crystal has adopted in City Slickers? Because the writer invested in character. The monster’s character, the family's character — he made us love that furry, ne’r do well critter. Billy Crystal’s character's attachment to the calf echos our own attachment—in both cases the creatures taught us lessons about life and showed the vulnerability of us all. We cared!

Bring your most important characters front and center early. Make sure we have a reason to care about them.

Small Town Secrets is due out next month. I can't wait to have it available. I think living in a small town most of my life in one area of the country or another has given me a perspective about the nuances of Small Town life. The feeling of family in a community the size of my current home in Amberg, Wisconsin permeates every small town or so it seems. As my grandfather used to say "I don't need to turn on my directional light in a small town. Everyone knows where I'm going by the time of day and the day of the week." I used to laugh and think him a bit eccentric. But, it's true. Little gets by the watchful eyes of small town USA.

I take that atmosphere and play with it in Small Town Secrets. I'm hoping that people will fall in love with Chaneeta Morgan as much as I have. She is a living breathing composite of some of the people who have touched my life in small towns from Michigan, Wisconsin, Colorado, Okalahoma, and many places inbetween.

The twins Taaktu (take two) and Twice Tewsday are modeled after my sister in laws - who just happen to be twins. They are delightful in real life and I hope they have some resemblence to the real people as Small Town Secrets unfolds to my readers.
