Kat here. Check out this interview with me on Catholic Online, about my mysteries with Wings!

Where Imaginations Soar... And Dreams Take Flight

That's great news, Dave. Congratulations.

I can't believe that the weekend is almost over. I usually do marathon writing sessions on Friday and Saturday nights, typically going until about 3 or 4 in the morning -- which is the time I crawl out of bed on weekdays to prepare for the opening bell of the stock market. This weekend, I added another two long sessions during that day, also. The effort paid off, as I worked out a plot point that's had me stumped and knocked off a particularly challenging chapter. So I'm sailing -- but then, again, that could be the caffeine ;)

The bad news is, I didn't get my housework done or the dogs bathed, as planned. Oh well. The dogs aren't complaining.

Nora
Hi all. Back from my writer's workshop. What a fantastic time I had. Not only did I get autographs on books from William Kent Krueger and Jeffery Deaver, but I actually got to talk to them at length. Okay for about a half hour total and some of it was dangling behind someone else's shoulder but I did manage a couple of spine-tingling comments like, "Wow" or "So cool." You get the picture.
In reality I was able to receive a one-on-one critique from W K Krueger, a real favorite of mine, and he ENJOYED MY STORY and LOVED MY TITLE. Even the side citicisms were gentle and I hope I didn't slobber on him. I can't remember. The most exciting thing is that he is going to do a blurb for Shepherd's Pie, my book coming out in Nov. ARRRGGGGHHHHH.
Now that my heart is back in the correct ventricle I need to get on with finishing my next book.
First I must repel from my ceiling position and settle down into my chair.

Whoo-hoo. Just got a five angels and a recommended read from Fallen Angel Reviews for my second fantasy/scifi novel Acceptance. How great is that! Want an excerpt? Go to take a look.

It comes out August 1st! Just dancin'... dancin'... dancin'

Thanks so much to everyone who has emailed me with feedback on my entry at the Romance Junkies Writing Contest! I really appreciate your help, your talent, and your suggestions! Thank you!!
Nancy/Honor here.

I worked some more on SWORD AND ILLUSION last night. I was going to put off writing this week because my inlaws are here and consquently, my DD15 won't be taking her usual three hours to watch DS3 every afternoon, but last night my DH found me playing on the computer NOT writing and said something. Anyway, chapters 4 and 5 and 5.5 are ready for him (he's my critiquer and he's TOUGH) to look over. I have up to 8 written, but he wanted to look at them before I move on. Today, if there is time, I will work on 6-8 and possibly move on. I am eager to write new stuff and frankly to get this book out to Wings to see what they think. It's the sequel to ATTACK OF THE QUEEN which seems to be my bestseller. I'd like to get a few more books out there.

I have another inspirational or sweet contemporary romance finished, and a nice writer friend has read the whole book and was nice enough to mark it up for me. When SWORD AND ILLUSION is finished (or when the whole thing is in my critiquer's hands) I'll work on that one.

Wednesday, July 27, 2005

I've been working on the sequel to ATTACK OF THE QUEEN, currently titled SWORD AND ILLUSION. However, I'm taking this week off from writing because the inlaws are here from New Jersey for a week. My father-in-law, Marine Guy, has been working like crazy getting some little things fixed around here that Beloved just doesn't have time for. Every day in every way, my beautiful house gets better and better.

What a great day today! Had a rain last night and the heat spell is broken. Just dropped in to say hi on my way to a writer's workshop in Indiana for three days. Will check back next week. I'm anxious to meet two of my favorite authors, William Kent Krueger and Jeffery Deaver. Sweaty palms already. Going to miss my wife and my dog. Wife won't let me send pictures but my dog will. LOL
Dave

Hi Everyone,

Well, I actually gathered up my courage and entered the Romance Junkies Writing Contest. This is the second contest I've entered and since I was nervous about feedback, I entered under a pseudonym. My entry is entitled:

Tamales in Season

Here's the link:

http://www.contestjunkies.com/artman/publish/cat_index_33.php

If you like the story, I'd appreciate your vote! If not, well, nothing ventured, nothing gained!
Thanks for the well wishes, all. I am feeling better today, Monty the cat's asthma isn't so bad since he's medication has been upped, Baby's decided she doesn't like her medicine so it's a daily fight, and Cara is snugged down in some warm blankets. So all is well so far! LOL

Back to work tonight - and I'm up to ch 5 in my current WIP! boo hoo! I'd so much rather stay home and write late into the night *wiping eyes*.

I had a gander at Steve's baby doves photo...they are sooooo cute! LOL

cheers!

So, Angela's chilling down under... and we're toasting in the desert. What we need is a happy medium. Speaking of the weather, we had a great thunderstorm this evening. In most of the world, that's not exactly news. But here in the Phoenix area, it happens so rarely that it's almost cause for a holiday.

I had an afternoon. I gave my second speech at Toastmasters. It was scary and exhilarating all at once. Facing fear is tough business.

I posted the text of my speech on my blog: http://norapeterson.blogspot.com

It's titled: The Courage of Ordinary People

If you've got about 7 minutes, drop over and read it. Well, that's how long it took to give it; reading it should take about half that time.

Nora
Kat here. I just received two nice reviews of the Ash Lake mysteries from Once Upon a Romance:

4.5 stars for Saints Preserve Us
4.5 stars for Pray For Us Sinners

Woo!
Hi all,
Not many posts yesterday. It is hard to keep up blogs, forums, search for places to try and sell a book! LOL Put a link to my website on a horror search engine today. Don't expect many hits from there - but I'll try it. Also, spent some time at Amazon trying to search out the procedure for listing a book for sale there. Do not have that figured out yet.
Hey, Angela. sorry to hear you're not feeling well. Winter will do that. Get well soon. Better go now, really need to get some work done!!! Louise.

Hi all! I saw from the comments that you're all toasty warm in the US *wink*.

I'm currently fighting some sort of bug...headaches, nausea...yadda yadda yadda. had two nights off work, but am determined to get back there tomorrow night.

Had two of the furbabies at the vet this morning. Baby needed a recheck of her blood - one of her liver enzymes had been up last time. This time it was double! The vet's not sure what is going on, as everything else is fine. So she's being started on ... I can't remember properly - milk thistle or something? It's a herbal remedy to help rejuvenate the liver. The other furbaby, Cara, we thought might have had pancreatitis, but it looks like it may not be now. We have to give her only water for a day or so...she will NOT be impressed. But as she's been vomiting, her gut needs a rest.

I swear, these cats are conspiring to keep me broke! LOL

have started ch 4 of the current WIP. keep going back and changing things now and again. That's what happens when you get bored lying in the sick bed and decide to sneak out and do some writing. I'm obviously not thinking straight, hence having to go back and change thinsg after I've thought about it all LOL. It just gets to me, lying in bed when I could be using the time off writing...*sigh* Such as now, when I've snuck out to check my email

Thinking of making a nice, hot stew for tea. that'll be followed with ice cream, of course. Which makes perfect sense, right?

cheers!

Hey all

okay, I posted once then vanished. This happened because I (1) forgot this address to post to, and (2) thought I had wrecked my password and that was why I couldn't get in. Today I found out it was (3), I didn't have the right username to start with! *sigh* I am cyberspaced challenged...LOL

Currently working on book 11, with the help of my furbabies, who like to get in front of the screen, check out the pens, lie in the drawers, and stick their noses in the printer. They also like to stand on the keyboard and help type. Little treasures *rolling eyes*. It doesn't help much when I'm on limited time, as I work full time as well! Would rather write full time, but I'm aiming for that . Everyone has to have a dream! Meanwhile, I have to eat and pay bills (mostly vet bills ROTFL)

Still freezing cold Down Under. yesterday I helped man the cake stall for the RSPCA. The day before I made cakes for the stall, and ate haf the cake mix. Life's like that. You gotta test the mix, you know

hoo roo for now!

Hi, Thought I'd try out some different fonts here, just to see what this tool bar
offers. Not bad, lots of editing choices. Now you can see
what I do when I am putting off the some times difficult business
of story making. I use to sharpen pencils. And stack papers--
hard to say why I delay, because once I begin and get into a
story - I don't want to stop. My delay tactic now is checking
my email, reading the forum, too many places to go on the web!
Hey, Angela. You aren't the only one that didn't immediately
find the place to start a post. But, as you can see - I found
it too. Drat!! Now, I suppose, this will be another place
to visit before I get down to business. Bye for now, Louise.
My first published book will be Shepherd's Pie Nov 2006 with Wings. Mike Shepherd is a Chicago private detective winging (pun intended) his way down the Eden's Expressway to an important date with his long time girl friend, Diana Barton. They have been at odds over his occupation. He likes it and she hates it. He could be doing something more worthwhile than chasing criminals. So he makes a date and wears his only suit to make amends for all the times he has missed a date or stood her up to earn his meager living. The suit is a gallant gesture because he always wears jeans. To dress up he wears a sport coat with his jeans.
Unfortunately he spots fugitive Ferlin Husky Lewis (his father was a big country music fan) tooling down the same Eden's Expressway. Mike decides to chase him for the $3,000 bounty and, as luck would have it, Mike's cell phone has not been properly charged so he can't tell Diana that he will again be late or a no show.
Mike gets shot at, ruins his suit and loses Ferlin and when he goes to Diana's apartment she's so upset she decides to break off their relationship. To make matters even worse, Ferlin who was sent to jail when Mike captured him seven years ago now becomes incensed that Mike is again chasing him, that he goes on a killing rampage stalking Mike and Diana.
go to www.jdwebb.com to read the first chapter. Let me know what you think.

I called and confirmed my reservations for the Writers Of The Future Awards banquet in Seattle next month. I'm still wondering why I got an invite. Hoping--fingers crossed and everything--it's because my story "Jaded" was one of the winners.

That would be SO cool.

Regardless it's an opportunity to visit the new sci-fi museum in Seattle, and hobnob with a few big name authors. Maybe I'll get to meet one of my idols...out of the few who are still with us, that is. I know Brian Herbert, Frank's son, is one of the judges. Alas, Heinlein is gone to that great writer's convention in the sky, so he's unlikely to show up.

The man I'd dearly love to meet, however, is Spider Robinson.
Hi Fellow Wingnuts,
Nora, thanks for the invite - as you can see I am now a blogger! I am happy to be part of this
new spot to air our wisdom :) and opintions about our writing. Must go, I'll be back later.

THE KEEPERS Published June 2005 by Wingsepress.
I am scheduled to be at this event, signing Saints Preserve Us and Pray For Us Sinners at At Journey's End B&B. Wings author Lydia Filzen is also scheduled to be there.

The St. Augustine Historic Inns and the First Coast Romance Writers Association are hosting a Sunday afternoon tour of Inns and published romance writers on October 2, 2005 from 2:00pm – 5:00pm. Each of the 24 historic inns will open their doors to tour goers, sharing their distinctive and award-winning properties for a glimpse into the romantic past. At the same time, prominent romance writers will be at each inn meeting fans and signing their most recently published novels.

The cost for the ‘Romantic Inns and Writers Tour’ is $20, (a non-refundable donation) with a portion of the proceeds to be given to EPIC Community Services (Education Prevention Intervention & Counseling).

Tickets can be reserved in advance by calling (904)829-3295 or purchased on the day of the event at participating inns. Each ticket will have a self-guided map of inns and authors for tour goers’ convenience.

A $20 discount on bed & breakfast accommodations will be offered from October 2-6 for tour ticket holders (up to $20/night per room).

Nationally recognized for more than a decade for their open house Holiday Tour each December, the St. Augustine Historic Inns are a stunning collection of 19th and 20th century homes, dating from 1791-1915. They embody the romance and history of St. Augustine, offering the best in architectural preservation, unique character, tradition and hospitality for which America’s oldest city is known. Within walking distance to each other, they are surrounded by charming boutiques, international restaurants, historic landmarks, the Atlantic Ocean, legends and ghosts that go back to the founding of St. Augustine in 1565. This year, the Inn Association celebrates its 20th Anniversary.

Get Lively!

Hello, I'm Kathryn Lively, author of Saint Preserve Us and Pray For Us Sinners, two mysteries in the Ash Lake series out with Wings. Both have been named CatholicMom.com Book Club selections, and have received good reviews thus far. Both books feature amateur sleuth Ronnie Lord, a widowed community college professor whose great, great-aunt is on the path to sainthood.

Saints Preserve Us tells the story of Blessed Lorena Alger's body being stolen and held for ransom. Ronnie must find her and find the person who murdered the cemetery's caretaker.

Pray For Us Sinners tells the story of Ronnie's friend Allayne Witt, who dies after a bout with cancer. Or was she murdered?

I plan to sell and sign these books at various festivals. Keep an eye out for the dates.
Okay all, let's take this in a different direction. Where do you come up with your ideas for your books?

Thursday, July 21, 2005

I just moved from Pennsylvania to Louisiana, and while you might expect this entry to be about the heat and humidity (which is brutal, trust me!), it's not.

It's about unpacking. If it weren't for the total nightmare of selling and closing on our old house, I'd think unpacking was the worse part of moving. Actually, packing was worse, I guess, but I hate the fact that we're here, in our new beautiful house and I still have work to do to make us actually HERE.

Anyway, my bedroom, which is more like a suite and has the potential to be a room I would never want to leave, especially if Beloved buys the bedroom set he's been looking at, is full of boxes. All the boxes that he didn't know what to do with when the movers came were put here!

I finally can't live with it anymore, so I started unpacking some of the boxes we've been walking around. I found TWO fairly large boxes of books I want to read.

I know this is an obsession, an addiction, a guilty pleasure - buying more books than I can ever read. I go into a bookstore (and the Barnes & Noble near here is AMAZING - we were there two days ago) and I start to feel this anxiety. There are more books than I'll ever be able to afford, to read or more importantly - these are books I DIDN'T WRITE!!!

I literally wander around the romance section and wonder if all the good ideas are gone!!

Oh, my, I'm starting to feel antsy again. I think I need to go deal with kids. Maybe the thoughts will go away!
Hello all,
Just a quick message from Tricia McGill who is enjoying a beauiful sunny winter's day in Australia. I'm looking forward to being a part of this blog. I've just recieved my wonderful cover art for my next release, Irresistible Challenge, a contemporary romance, which will be my 7th Wings' book and will be out July next year. Glad to be a part of this elite group of writers.

Hey it's working great! Thanks Nora for all your hard work on this. This should be a great place for all the Wings authors, fans and anyone else who wants to become part of our big supportive family

Hi everyone! Okay, I'm taking the plunge too! A blogging we will go. :)) Anyone see Charlie & the Chocolate Factory? Comments on how it compares with the older Willie Wonka one?

Moon Over Chicago. Hello to everyone. J D Webb (Dave) here and ready to talk about my newest release from Wings sked for Mar 2007. This book has as its main character Fulton Moon (Yes, nicknamed Full Moon) who is a cobbler by trade in Chicago. His shop called Moonshines, located in a less than upscale area, is a gathering place for homeless and indigent neighbors. Fulton tries to help them out whenever they get into trouble. This time he gets in way over his head . Beautiful and sinister Lucinda Mathews is trying to escape an abusive husband and before Fulton knows it, he's involved in a kidnapping, muggings and even murder. Fulton, devoutly Caucasian, is ably assisted by his surrogate father Benjamine Franklikn Washington, proudly African-American, who dispenses advice that is not always heeded.
The old saying write about something you know is in play here as I owned a shoe repair business for 12 years. I thought it would a different slant to have a cobbler as a amateur detective. I invite everyone to visit my website and read the first chapter of my book. www.jdwebb.com Then come back and ask any questions or make comments about it. I'll answer.
Since it's the 21st of July, that's an odd day, so I have to remember to take my Viamin E. I read somewhere that 400 U of E was too much for the average person to be taking on a daily basis, so, since I had this huge bottle of 400 U gel caps you can't cut in two, I take one on odd days only. The end of this month will create a problem, so I'll skip two days. Vitamin E aside, what's up in my life? The Viking and I are heading for Reno on the 26th for the Romance Writers of American National Conference. Since we used to live 30 miles from Reno, this gives us a chance to see old friends as well. Our calico cat Kinko won't appreciate being boarded for a week, and will greet us on our return with a lot of complaints. She's an outdoor/indoor cat and really resents being boarded. We live next to woods and last month a big doe chased her through the yard, after which she voluntarily stayed insde for 2 days. Apparently the gray fox we see regularly passing through doesn't upset her. She was inside last year when the bear cub climbed the big ash tree outside our screened porch, batted the bird feeder until a bunch of seed fell out, then shinnied down and feated on them. We never did see Mama Bear.
I write for Wings ePress, among other epublishers. A great site. Check them out. Jane Toombs
Hi! I think I'm in. Dawn Thompson
Have I mentioned how extraordinary Arizona is?

We have three coyote pups living on the golf course behind our house. (Sun City is riddled with them -- golf courses, not coyotes, although we have a fair number of those also.) These pups can't be more than 12 to 16 weeks old. One of them has decided he wants to play with our dogs!

Every time he sees us take one of the dogs out back, he comes skipping across the fairway to greet us. He bows and prances the way dogs do when they want to play, trying to get Mango or Ziggy to chase him. Obviously, we keep a tight reign on our pup, who has a barking conniption, and we don't let them get close -- but it is the coolest thing I've seen in a long time.

Since I've decided to set my new series right here in Arizona and am trying to include as much local color as possible, I'm finding that I notice detail now that might otherwise fade into the background. It reminds me daily of how miraculous it is that life of any sort can exisit in this unforgiving environment.

On my website, I have a Photo Gallery page where I've included some of our pictures. The photos of our dogs are on the bio page, of course, because they're our kids, not wildlife. (Although, when they're dashing through the house at warp speed, they definitely qualify as wild ;)

Nora
Hi, I made it!

Josie
Hi all

Can't believe I actually made it here without stumbling! LOL Okay, I stumbled a couple of times *sigh*. I see most people are sweltering in the summer heat, but Down Under, it's winter! It's also 11:16pm at night, and I should be writing, not playing on the computer ROTFL. Don't tell my editor!!
Hello all! I'm Lori Libby and live in Maine. It's been hot and sticky here too. It's supposed to be better today. We'll see. I write romantic suspense and am planning a young adult novel. I teach 7th grade and I read to them in the morning. Someday it would be kind of cool to read something I wrote. Of course I wouldn't tell them I did until the end of the book! LOL

Hello from sizzling Arizona. The monsoon has arrived, which means I can lock myself up in the air conditioning for at least the next six to eight weeks and write, write, write. Except for little diversions such as this, of course.

My debut novel, a mystery titled Past Imperfect, is set for publication September 2006. That seems like such a long way off until I think about everything I have to do before the big day -- like getting my next book finished. It's coming along well. I had a few false starts, trying to get my protag down just right, but now she and I are getting to know each other well enough to make for smoother sailing. My working title is Due Diligence, but then again, I changed the title for Past Imperfect three times before I finished it.

I love to talk about just about anything, so belly up to the keyboard and shoot some questions our way.
Saje Williams here. Author of three novels so far, though only the first has been published as of today's date.

Not sure what kinds of things I'll post on this blog, but since I'm sharing it with several author Wings authors, I thought I'd drop by and say hello regardless.
Hi, Wings fans! Nancy S. Brandt here, also writing as Honor Cummings. I have two books with Wings so far, but I hope that won't be the end of it! I love to talk about my writing and would be thrilled to chat with any of you, so comment away!
Hello from the deep south. Another Wings author signing in. I'm afraid weather will be my big thing at least until October. Great excuse to write about a Hurricane. Names anyone?
